What are hub adapters?

Hub adapters are precision-machined components used to solve wheel fitment problems. Depending on the application, they can change the wheel bolt pattern, correct the centre bore, increase spacing, or allow wheels from one manufacturer to be fitted to another vehicle.

PCD adapters, sometimes called PCD conversion adapters, are a specific type of hub adapter that converts one bolt pattern to another. For example, a vehicle with a 5×120 bolt pattern may need an adapter to fit wheels drilled to 5×114.3 or 5×112.

A properly designed adapter must do more than change bolt holes. It must locate accurately on the vehicle hub, provide the correct centre bore for the wheel, use the correct hardware, and have sufficient thickness and strength for the application.

Why use PCD adapters?

PCD adapters are useful when the wheels you want do not share the same bolt pattern as the vehicle. They are common on custom builds, rare wheel fitments and brand-to-brand conversions.

Wheel conversionFit wheels with a different bolt pattern to the original vehicle hub.
Rare wheel fitmentUse OEM or aftermarket wheels that are not normally available for your car.
Brake clearanceIncrease wheel spacing where required for larger brake calipers.
Offset correctionMove wheel position outward while changing bolt pattern at the same time.
Hubcentric locationMaintain correct centre location on both the vehicle hub and the wheel.
Custom buildsUseful for kit cars, race cars, restomods and specialist wheel swaps.

Hub adapters vs wheel spacers.

The products can look similar, but they solve different fitment problems.

Hub adapters / PCD adapters

  • Change bolt pattern between vehicle and wheel.
  • Can correct centre bore differences.
  • Often use dual PCD machining and separate hardware.
  • Common for brand-to-brand wheel conversions.
  • Typically require more design checks than simple spacers.

Wheel spacers

  • Keep the same bolt pattern.
  • Move the wheel outward from the hub face.
  • Used for stance, offset correction and brake clearance.
  • Usually simpler than a PCD conversion adapter.
  • Best when the wheel already matches the vehicle PCD.

Hub adapters by vehicle.

Most hub adapter projects start with the vehicle brand, then confirm the wheel bolt pattern, centre bore and target offset.

Engineered around the full fitment.

A safe adapter must consider more than bolt pattern. Centre location, hardware clearance, thread engagement, thickness and wheel offset all matter.

Hub adapter FAQs.

Common questions before ordering PCD adapters, hub adapters or custom wheel conversion parts.

What is a hub adapter?

A hub adapter is a machined component used to adapt wheel fitment. It may correct centre bore, change bolt pattern, add spacing, or combine several of these functions in one part.

What is a PCD adapter?

A PCD adapter converts one bolt pattern to another. For example, it can allow wheels drilled to 5×114.3 to be fitted to a vehicle with a 5×120 hub, provided the adapter is designed correctly.

Are PCD adapters safe?

They can be safe when correctly engineered, hubcentric, manufactured from suitable material and installed with the correct hardware. The design must account for centre location, thickness, bolt clearance and thread engagement.

What information do you need for custom adapters?

We need the vehicle PCD, wheel PCD, vehicle centre bore, wheel centre bore, required thickness, bolt or stud type, thread size, seat type and any clearance constraints.

Can hub adapters change wheel offset?

Yes. Because adapters have thickness, they move the wheel outward and effectively reduce offset. This must be considered when calculating final wheel position.

Do adapters include hardware?

Where required, adapters are specified with the correct bolts, studs or nuts for the application. Hardware depends on the vehicle, adapter thickness and wheel design.

Can you make one-off PCD adapters?

Yes. Brightstone Engineering can produce custom PCD adapters for unlisted fitments, rare wheels and specialist builds where the measurements are known or can be confirmed.

Need custom hub adapters?

Send your vehicle PCD, wheel PCD, centre bore sizes and required thickness, or contact Brightstone Engineering if you need help confirming the correct specification.
