72.6, 66.6 or 74.1mm — Which Spec Is Your BMW?

BMW uses three centre bores. Most 5×120 cars are 72.6mm — F-Series saloons and coupés take an M14×1.25 bolt, and the older E-Series 3, 5 and 1 Series and Z4 take an M12×1.5 bolt (both are the same kit — you pick the bolt thread on the product page). G-Series cars moved to 5×112 / 66.6mm. The larger cars — the E39 5 Series, E38 and E65/E66 7 Series, and every X5 and X6 up to the F15/F16 — run 5×120 / 74.1mm. BMW E-Series Wheel Spacers

E-Series BMWs split two ways. The large cars — E39 5 Series, E38 and E65/E66 7 Series, and the E53, E70 and E71 X5 and X6 — run 5×120 / 74.1mm. The E36, E46 and E90 3 Series, E60/E61 and E34 5 Series, E82/E87 1 Series and E85/E86 Z4 share the 72.6mm bore but use an M12×1.5 bolt — select that thread on the 72.6mm kit page. The E30 uses a 4×100 pattern and needs its own spacer.

E-chassis 3, 5 & 1 Series and Z4 — M12×1.5

These cars share the 72.6mm centre bore of the F-chassis range but use an M12×1.5 wheel bolt, not the F-chassis M14×1.25 — so they take a different kit. The BMW E-Chassis 5×120 / 72.6mm (M12×1.5) spacers cover them, extended M12×1.5 bolts included.

Every G-Series BMW uses 5×112 with a 66.6mm centre bore and an M14×1.25 wheel bolt — one product covers the whole range.

X1, X2 and i3 — fitment varies

The X1 (F48, U11), X2 (F39, U10) and i3 don't follow the same pattern as the rest of the range — some are 5×112, some 5×120, with different bores. Message us your registration and we'll confirm the exact spec before you order.

Ordering the wrong PCD
Assuming every BMW uses 5×120 is the single most common mistake — G-Series switched to 5×112. Always check your chassis code before ordering.

Buying universal, non-hubcentric spacers
Universal spacers rely on the wheel bolts alone to centre the wheel instead of the hub, which often causes vibration and uneven loading. Always use spacers hubcentric to your specific BMW.

Reusing the original wheel bolts
Standard-length bolts are too short once a spacer is added. Extended bolts are required for correct thread engagement — every Brightstone kit includes them.

Confirm your spec
Check your PCD, centre bore and bolt thread — 5×120 / 72.6mm (F-Series), 5×112 / 66.6mm (G-Series) or 5×120 / 74.1mm (5 & 7 Series, X5, X6) — before ordering. If unsure, message us your registration.

Clean the hub face
Remove any dirt, corrosion or debris. The spacer must sit perfectly flat against the hub for correct hubcentric seating.

Apply anti-seize sparingly
A light coating on the hub face helps prevent the spacer corroding onto an aluminium hub over time, making future removal easier.

Locate the spacer on the hub
The spacer locates on the hub register and sits flush against the hub face. It should not rock or move once seated.

Refit the wheel with the supplied extended bolts
Torque to BMW's factory specification — around 120Nm on M12×1.5 chassis and 140Nm on M14×1.25 chassis — using a calibrated torque wrench in a star pattern. Do not use an impact gun for final tightening.

Re-torque after 50–100 miles
Re-check bolt torque after the first drive to confirm the assembly has fully seated and clamping load is maintained.

Legal & MOT (UK)

The MOT test doesn't prohibit wheel spacers directly — it checks that wheels and tyres don't protrude beyond the bodywork. Correctly sized spacers that keep the wheel within the arch aren't an MOT concern on that basis. As with any modification, you should declare fitted spacers to your insurer.
