What are wheel spacers?

Wheel spacers are precision-machined components that fit between the vehicle hub and the wheel. Their purpose is to move the wheel outward from the hub face, increasing track width and changing where the wheel sits in the arch.

Owners fit wheel spacers for several reasons: improving stance, correcting wheel offset, creating brake clearance, filling the arches after suspension changes, or achieving a more balanced OEM+ appearance. On many cars, a correctly chosen spacer makes the wheel sit closer to flush with the bodywork without changing the wheel itself.

The important point is that a wheel spacer is not just a flat disc. A proper hubcentric spacer must match the vehicle's centre bore and hub lip so the wheel remains accurately located on the hub. Your car's weight travels through the hub, not the bolts — a correctly designed spacer preserves that relationship exactly. This is why vehicle-specific design matters.

Hubcentric spacers

  • Vehicle-specific centre bore and hub location.
  • The wheel is centred by the hub, not only by the fasteners.
  • Designed to reduce the risk of vibration.
  • Correct fitment for premium and performance vehicles.
  • Suitable when accuracy and repeatability matter.

Bolt-on spacers

  • Bolts to the hub, then provides new studs or bolts for the wheel.
  • The only design that allows a PCD (bolt pattern) change, not just spacing.
  • Handles larger thicknesses, typically 15mm and up.
  • More involved installation than a slip-on hubcentric spacer.
  • Right choice when you need a different bolt pattern, not just more offset.

Universal spacers

  • Generic bore and multi-fit bolt pattern.
  • Often relies on bolts or nuts to centre the wheel.
  • Vibration risk increases with speed — not suitable for performance driving.
  • Usually chosen for low-cost fitments rather than precision.
  • Not the approach Brightstone uses for vehicle-specific kits.

Thickness controls how far the wheel moves outward. Thin spacers must also be checked against hub lip height to make sure the spacer can sit fully flat against the hub face.

Are wheel spacers safe?

Yes, when four things are right: correct PCD, centre bore and hub lip specification, quality material (6082-T6 aluminium), precision CNC machining, and correct bolt length and torque. Poorly made universal spacers are where many problems begin.

What's the difference between cheap and precision wheel spacers?

Material grade, machining tolerance and bore accuracy. A budget import and a precision CNC-machined hubcentric spacer can look similar, but the difference is the gap between a safety risk and a safe modification. We machine to ±0.02mm — tighter than most automotive aftermarket standards.

Are wheel spacers legal in the UK?

Wheel spacers are commonly used in the UK, but the vehicle must remain roadworthy. Wheels and tyres should not foul bodywork, suspension or brake components, and the vehicle must remain safe to drive.

Do I need to tell my insurer?

Yes — declare wheel spacers to your insurer as a modification. It's usually straightforward and inexpensive, and insurers typically treat properly fitted hubcentric spacers as low-risk. Claims have been denied for undeclared modifications even when the modification played no role in the incident, so it's worth a five-minute call.

Do I need longer wheel bolts?

For bolt-through spacers, yes — extended bolt length should equal your original bolt length plus the spacer thickness, with at least 1.5× the bolt diameter in thread engagement. Some thicker designs use bolt-on hardware instead. Every Brightstone kit includes the correct extended bolts, so you won't need to source anything separately.

Do I need an alignment after fitting spacers?

Not usually. Hubcentric spacers don't change your suspension geometry — toe, camber and caster stay as they are. Most drivers notice improved cornering stability from the wider track instead. See our full alignment guide for edge cases.

Can wheel spacers cause vibration?

Incorrectly specified or poorly centred spacers can cause vibration. A hubcentric spacer is designed to locate accurately on the hub and centre the wheel correctly.

What thickness wheel spacers should I choose?

This depends on the car, wheel offset, tyre size, hub lip height and the look you want. 10mm is subtle, 15mm is a common all-round size, and 20mm or more is usually more aggressive.

What does hubcentric mean?

Hubcentric means the spacer locates on the vehicle hub and provides a matching centre spigot for the wheel. This keeps the wheel centred properly instead of relying only on the bolts or nuts.

Can I fit wheel spacers myself?

Many spacer kits can be fitted by a competent home mechanic, but correct cleaning, seating, torque and re-checking are essential. If you are unsure, professional installation is recommended.

Do wheel spacers affect wheel bearings?

Any increase in wheel offset changes leverage on the hub and bearing. Sensible spacer sizes on correctly maintained road cars are commonly used, but very aggressive fitments can increase load.
